Summer Medical Institute Philadelphia 2012
The Summer Medical Institute Philadelphia 2012 (SMI Philly 2012) is a summer outreach initiative in which volunteer health professions students and doctors address health needs of a low-income community, and learn to integrate faith and medical practice. The program is run by Esperanza Health Center, in conjunction th Medical Campus Outreach, a Christian health professions student outreach on the medical campuses of Philadelphia. Dates for SMI Philly 2012 are yet to be determined - please check this website for updated information.
SMI Philly 2012 participants will work in North Philadelphia going door-to-door, offering HIV, diabetes, blood pressure and nutritional screens and sharing the love of Christ through conversation and prayer. Through this experience the students will learn first-hand the impact of social, cultural, emotional, spiritual, and economic factors on health. At Esperanza, students will have opportunity to observe an effective model of Christian primary health care. During SMI Philly 2012, students will live in community with one another, and work in partnership with area churches, attending services on Sunday and getting to know the community.
